The
formation of the Central New York International Business
Alliance is an exciting announcement for any business
organization with an interest in finding local resources to
assist its forward movement in the global marketplace.
The roots of the CNYIBA go back to the dissolution of
the CNY Trade Council several years ago. A gap was created,
leaving area organizations with a lack of a central resource for
information which would help them grow their business
internationally. In Fall 2001, a Steering Committee was created
from a core group representing area private industry, local
economic development organizations, and government. Throughout
the past year we have studied ways area organizations need
assistance to help them enhance their own participation in the
global markets.
Resource areas will include: trade (export and import)
and immigration, joint venture opportunities
Business segments include (but are not limited to)
manufacturing, distributorships, service businesses, technology,
intellectual property, logistics and trade facilitation, finance
and immigration.
Geography: Generally, the CNY region -- Syracuse and
Onondaga County, north to Watertown, east to Utica, South to
Tompkins County, and west to Cayuga/Seneca Counties.
The organization will grow through tiers of memberships
(tiers not yet determined) which will allow all
organizations, of any size, with an interest in international
business to participate.
Funding will be sought from members and private and/or
government agency grants.
Leadership for the group will operate through a
Board of Directors, comprised of area
private industry, economic development organizations and
government. Three committees have been formed:
• Financial Resources (initially facilitated by Dan
Duffy, JPMorgan Chase)
• Outreach / Education / Programs (initially facilitated
by Peter Koveos, SU School of Management and Director of the
Kiebach International Studies Center)
• Membership / Communications (initially facilitated by
Greg Hitchin, Onondaga County and Trisha Torrey, IntegriMark
Communications)
The first two named programs supported by the CNYIBA
are as follows:
-
Executive Briefing: American Russian Chamber of Commerce
(September 19, 2002)
-
SESAME Network: International Business Conference being
held in Syracuse in May 2003
