The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a new, high-standard trade agreement that includes 12 countries that collectively account for 40 percent of global GDP.  On May 16, Mike Hammer, U.S. Ambassador to TPP partner Chile, will speak about the benefits to the United States of this agreement.

Chile is a TPP partner that already has a solid story to tell on trade.  The country has negotiated more free trade agreements than any other country on earth.  Since 2004, when the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement went into force, U.S. exports to Chile have more than quadrupled.  Today, Chileans spend more on U.S. products on a per capita basis than any other country in South America.  At the same time, Chile has enjoyed solid economic growth and development since the 1990s, and its system of open markets and solid macroeconomic management increasingly stands as a model around the world.

Under TPP, U.S. commercial opportunities in Chile and other TPP markets are set to expand even further.  In addition to eliminating over 18,000 tariffs that various countries put on Made-in-America products, TPP will ensure that our partners treat American products the same way that we treat products from their country.  It will cut red tape and reduce bureaucracy, which is particularly important in drawing our small businesses and family farms into new global supply chains.  According to a recent study by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, TPP could lift incomes for Americans by over $130 billion per year by 2030.

But beyond the economic benefits, TPP also reflects a strategic rationale to ensure that U.S. influence around the world remains strong.  It allows the United States to shape the rules of the agenda in a region that is the fastest-growing in the world at a time when China is rushing to do the same.  In Latin America, it allows the U.S. to lock in positive conditions and policies for U.S. firms, and offers an alternative to the statist model to which reformists across the region can aspire to reach.
