2.               OUTREACH & ENGAGEMENT    Regional companies / exporters

* = a CNYIBA Member, ^ =  an AMTEC Cluster Member

1.       Air innovations *^ They are making progress on their European project. John Tracy and I met with their new European Sales Manager and shared info on resources and assistance we can offer him.

2.      Cayuga Milk Ingredients:  CMI reached out for help as they risk losing $25m of Milk Protein ingredient exports to Canada. The WTO found the U.S. ‘COOL’ (Country of Origin Labeling) rules are not WTO compliant and Canada and Mexico will be authorized to seek retaliation using tariffs. I arranged to Kevin Ellis the CEO of CMI to attend a Trade Agreement meeting at the White House (18Nov15)  in order to highlight his issue. CCEO (Deb Warner) and I also met with Senator Schumer’s Regional Director with Kevin to put forward the issue and highlight this as a threat to the CMI business.  Kevin has asked for Lobbying assistance from CCEO. I’m also arranging an AMTEC ‘Tech Tuesday’ at CMI for December or January.

3.       Cooperstown Distillery  I have assisted them in a market targeting discussion helping them clarify priorities and methods for measuring potential opportunities in a shortlisted group of countries. I will also work with them on assessing a pricing strategy for Japan now they have a potential importing candidate they have begun initial discussions with..

4.      Dupli Envelope & Graphics Corp.- I briefly met Kemper Matt (Sr) and we will have a more formal meeting to discuss Dupli exports on Nov 23.

5.       Fountainhead Group *: FGI will be the first JP Morgan Chase Export Catalyst Pilot Program Candidate. They are keen to be involved in this initiative and are committing more time than ever on international growth opportunities. I hope to have the consultant in place working with them by the first week of December.

6.      GA Braun *^  Shared with them the new TPP agreement details and highlighted several items within the agreement that may mean we can get a better solution to their Service engineer problem in Canada.

7.       Gaylord Brothers *. I am working with them with their consolidation plan to reduce their 100 export countries into a more focused group. Most orders in the past have been for small amounts (sometimes just $1,000) in each country. Their new approach (assisted by learnings from ExportNY too) is to focus on 25 top markets. I have also encouraged them to consider some trade shows and offered to help them obtain STEP grant funds to pay for some trade show costs.

8.      Grand Slam Safety *After meeting with Bob Chamberlain recently I am now encouraging him to look more aggressively at his Korean opportunity and also work on Japan. His Korean ‘agent’ is not delivering any orders. They are now open to running a Gold Key Service to explore Japan and possibly Korea looking for new importing targets.

9.      Gryphon Sensors*  -  Are showing some interest in possibly attending the Singapore Air Show (Feb 16-16, 2016)

10.   Healthway Home Products^- We have confirmed we shall fund the Gold Key service for Healthway Home Products that will search for potential partners in Indonesia. John Tracy has initiated the GKS with the Jakarta Embassy.

11.   Inficon  *^  I have met with both the Service Tools Business Leader and also the Sales& Marketing Manager at Inficon Service tools (Leak detectors) and had a very productive meeting to discuss gathering more information and methods for them to develop / find new buyers in China. Next steps will be to get them set up with Gold Keys, International Partners searches and I will also help them on a method to search for distribution channel partners using a ‘complimentary product’ method of searching.

12.   Kohilo Wind  * The latest report indicates that the Philippines Business is now up and running nicely. The first shipment had severe damage to the turbines during shipment. The issues / breakages have been fixed and 3 of 4 turbines are producing electricity. This is a test period, but all indicators show further orders in the next 6 months. Brazil – is still progressing with the buyers even paying for test certification which Kohilo can then use worldwide. A great $ saving and one that helps Kohilo in many other markets.

13.   Leonardi Manufacturing – more assistance to help them with a Made in USA issue from their competitors.

14.   Oneida Air ^ Connected to them via John Tracy. I am hoping to meet with them in early December.

15.   Sunoco Fulton* – I’ve sent them details on  a Buyers Mission in Atlanta that really fits their Distillers Grains exports for animal feed. I’m also keeping updated from Washington DC about a potential meeting on Cuba that will take place in the White House in early 2016 and should be able to get Tim Hardy (General Manager) a place at the meeting. I also showed support to our member by attending their ribbon cutting ceremony for the new weighbridge on Nov 4.

3.       SERVICE PROVIDER  / OTHER OUTREACH

1.          JPMorgan Chase:

Rob Simpson  and I had a 2nd update conference call with them about the JPMC Export Catalyst Pilot Program. They are now aware we can proceed given National Grid have now verbally confirmed some additional funds to help the consulting fees. Previously the JPMC grant was indicating only about 8 consulting days per participating company which would not have enabled sufficient time to achieve the mission objectives. With the NG funds we should now be able to extend this to about 15 – 16 days per Pilot Company.

2.         M&L Worldwide Logistics: have now confirmed they will return as CNYIBA Sponsor Members and have now been invoiced ($1,000). They have also requested that I present the CNYIBA to their sales team at their annual sales meeting in December.

3.          Bank of America Merrill Lynch: I have had a Breakfast meeting with them and discussed setting up and promoting with them a series of Webinars for exporters in early 2016. They are currently working on agendas.

4.         Canadian Consul General: We are involved with the Canadian Consul General assisting them to set up a ‘Pop Up’ day in Syracuse in February 17, 2016. This will cover a variety of topics including Aerospace innovation, Energy, Immigration and others.

5.          Empire State Development: No new news from them regarding the Global NY Grant funds application forms. This has been 13 months since the announcement yet no movement on helping exporters (or us) accessing this resource.

6.         Ex-Im Bank – Some light in the tunnel. The House voted to pass the Highways Bill in October and  Ex-Im’s inclusion in this virtually reassures its reauthorization.

7.          CNY Inland Port – I have connected Bank of America Merrill Lynch (Mike Brunner)  to Zelko Kirincich t the Oswego Port for discussion on the CNY Inland Port Project. I also received one NIMBY email that I passed onto him.

8.         MV Edge – We are meeting headwinds on engaging with many of the targeted MVEdge exporters. Feedback seems more of apathy toward exporting in quite a few instances.

5         EVENTS & Promotional activity for the CNYIBA

Recent CNYIBA events and other events attended since last report

1.    CNYIBA Networking for Exporters Event November 19, 2015

Held at the Clark Ales Pub in Downtown Syracuse. 16 peoepl regaitered. Unfortunately only 3 of these are exporters. The rest are service providers. For the first time this month’s we’ve also had some non export related people registered too and I’ve called them to ask them not to attend as this is for companies focused on international business…  not for personal insurance salesmen or pension sales people…..

2.      Maple Syrup producer event of Lewis County

I ran a three-hour workshop in Lowville the evening of Nov 2, with about 20 Maple Syrup producers, the Cornell Cooperative extension and the President of the local maple Syrup producers association. I presented and promoted the CNYIBA Services and resources and then we discussed export opportunities, inducing sharing with them data on current exports. They had been focusing on China but the data showed tiny exports there and more immediate opportunities in Western Europe. The primary challenge though is whether they can consolidate their volumes to make it viable to export. It is a fragmented industry and small producers have no traction for exporting.

3.       Le Moyne College Student Brown Bag

This was set for Oct 22 but was cancelled as I had a commitment with CCEO on a strategic planning meeting. The new date has been reset and will be on Dec 3rd.

4.      Assemblyman Al Stirpe Meeting

I’m working with the Mr. Stirpes Chief of Staff toward an Export Roundtable Meeting on Syracuse on December 7th  from 1 to 3 p.m. Some of the CNYIBA board may be receiving invites.

5.       Canadian Consul General – pop Up event for Feb 17, 2016

We shall assist in the International trade elements of this event.

 ANY OTHER BUSINESS:

EXPORTNY Program:

Still going very well. This week we heard that RB Woodcraft have regrettably pulled out – no reason known as yet.

The other companies though are fully engaged and producing good updates

BYLAWS:

A final draft is getting close to being shared with the Board. Hoping to share this and discuss with the Board at the December Board meeting. Alan Fink, David Mankiewicz, Dave Kovarik and I are working on the draft.
